Resumo

This work analyses the performance of a production database in a steel company, before and after the implementation of a partitioning technique named horizontal partitioning. This technique was applied in a system named Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). These information and communication systems are responsible for maintain the data of the production processes in an organization. Considering the evolutionary and permanent feature of the organizational data, as the time pass, the database management systems that maintain e control these data suffer a great descent of performance, affecting directly the customers’ response time. From the analysis of the obtained results, it was possible to realize that the horizontal partitioning is a process, that, in fact, contributes to improve the performance of high volume tables, despite the increase of the size that the partitioned tables will have in the hard disks
