Resumo

The “new” IPv6 with 128bits addresses hugely expands the address space to allow the growing Internet, provides integrated support to mobility, is more secure  and has  auto configuration. Despite all these advertisedbenefits, the IPv6 is a recent protocol and its practical adoption on the Internet is  not representative in numbers and not even  operationally. Besides, IPv6 is a different one protocol than IPv4 and these two are not compatible each other, requiring  the adoption of techniques to make feasible the communication between the IPv4 and IPv6 “islands”. It is in this context that this paper presents a methodology to assess the Internet connectivity in Brazil through  three stages: (i) Traditional IPv4, (ii) 6in4 Tunnel and (iii) IPv6.
