Resumo

As information technology (IT) delivers old promises to make businesses more efficient, it is also influential in innovating modern business. To work well, however, the connection between the IT systems must be highly compatible. The adoption and implementation of business networks is sometimes perceived as a problem because of investments and unclearness of adoption benefits to adopters. This study is an exploratory research in an auto-parts enterprise, to verify how inter-organizational network technology is used and how it contributes to business innovation. The case explored is a Brazilian enterprise, leader in the auto-parts sector. Main results indicate that in the case selected, the inter-connective network was imposed by assembler enterprises, called initiators. There is a clear perception, by adopters, on the financial benefits and on performance, as outcome.  The main impact of inter-connectivity technology on the studied enterprise was a strategic renewal.  By adopting the technology, the auto-parts maker matured its inter-organizational network model and innovate its business concept, breaking into new markets, never before seeing as a plausible alternative. In despite of benefits, the inter-organizational technology is seeing as obsolescent.  Hence, it looks paradoxical.  On the one side it is beneficial to adopters, because it increases reliability, higher business flexibility and it lowers operating cost. On the other side, it is restrictive, because it is coerced by initiators and is based on EDI technology, considered obsolescent.  The final result, however, the technology is beneficial, as it enforced the use of new technologies based on Web Services and ebXML technology, as the enterprise now turns to the international smaller assemblers and to the consumer parts supplying markets
